One night in 1885 a German Jewish immigrant, Sigismund Mohr, made the city’s first spectacular demonstration of the use of electricity by lighting up the Dufferin Terrace. The residents were thrilled, and demanded electric light in all their streets. Arriving as an engineer in 1871, Sigismund Mohr was also responsible for the installation of a telephone system in the city during the 1870s. His greatest accomplishment was to harness the power of the Montmorency Falls in the following decade, giving the city a constant source of hydro-electricity.
