Who is Exposition Shalom Quebec?


Exposition Shalom Québec is a non-profit organization dedicated to research and promoting a better understanding of the history and cultural contribution of the Jewish community to the heritage of the city of Quebec, especially during the city's 400th birthday celebrations, through an exhibition, social, cultural and recreational events.

By telling our story we hope that people will discover how a cultural minority can contribute and integrate into the greater society while maintaining its own identity.

President: Arthur Aron is a senior advisor at BMO Nesbitt Burns. He has held the post of Vice President of the Voice of English-speaking Québec and is currently President of the Jewish Cemetery Corporation of Beth Israel Ohev Sholom in Québec City.

Vice President: Pierre Anctil holds a doctorate in Social Anthropology, in addition to pursuing post-doctoral studies. Since July 2004, he has been the Director of the Institute of Canadian Studies at the University of Ottawa. Since 1980 he has held the titles of Director, Advisor or President of a number of organizations in the fields of intercultural affairs, integration and immigration. He has received numerous awards for his research into the Jewish community of Quebec.

Secretary Treasurer: Frederic Potok is currently an Assistant Professor in Administration at the University of Moncton and is finishing a doctorate in administration science at Université Laval. His field of research relates to the partnerships between public administration and non-profit organizations within the framework of the reform for service delivery. Further to his research, he teaches courses in the management of non-profit organizations and is invited as a consultant or expert concerning governmental partnership programs.

Executive Director: Simon Jacobs is a violist with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. Since graduating with a major in music from York University’s Fine Arts program, he has been involved in different associations and organizations and has sat on many boards of directors and executive committees. As part of his community involvement, he has taken different seminars concerning the management of non-profit organizations.

Councillors:

Daniel Amar is the regional director for Quebec of the Canadian Jewish Congress. He has held many senior positions in government most notably International Affairs Advisor to Quebec's Premier, Chief of Staff to the Minister of Citizen Relations and Immigration; Economic Advisor to the Minister of State for Industry and Commerce; as well as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Minister for International Relations. Most recently, Mr. Amar served as Director of Communications and Government Relations for a private company.

Marc Gold is vice-president of Maxwell Cummings & Sons Holdings Ltd., and an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, McGill University. He is President of FEDERATION CJA, co-president of the Fondation de la tolérance, member of the executive committee of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and a member of the board of the University of Montreal.

Ira Robinson holds a doctorate in Jewish History from Harvard University and since 1979 has been a professor of Judaic studies in the Department of Religion at Concordia University. Active within the Jewish community, he has been president of the Jewish Public Library (Montreal) and currently sits on the National Executive board of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Recipient of numerous grants and awards, he has published many books and articles on Jewish history and thought.

Jean-François Royal currently holds the position of Director General of the Musée des religions de Nicolet, Quebec and has been the collections archivist and exhibits coordinator for the Musée du Château Ramezay. He holds master’s degrees in Museology and in History. Active in the Société des musées québécois, he contributes to the evaluation of various projects and sits on different museum-related administrative boards.

Roch Samson holds a doctorate in History from Université Laval and was an anthropologist and historian with the Cultural Heritage service of Parks Canada in Québec City. He is the author of numerous articles on the history of Quebec. Over the last thirty years he has taken part in the production of several exhibits and other interpretation projects regarding the development of national parks, marine conservation areas and historical places in Québec.

Denis Vaugeois is a historian and author as well as a public and political figure. He has written numerous reports, articles and books. Elected representative for the Parti Québécois in Trois-Rivieres in 1976, he has occupied the positions of Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister of the Cultural Affairs, Minister of Communications and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs. Since leaving politics he has been active in the book world and has sat on several commissions and associations linked to historic heritage.

The Team

Group GID

Since its creation, Groupe GID has had a hand in making the concept of cultural engineering evolve. Groupe GID’s experience extends from the conceptualization of a project to turnkey realizations. Discovering, unveiling, showing, revealing, imagining: that is the savoir-faire and mission of their cultural engineering team. Their designers, museologists, historians, project managers, writers, layout artists, graphic artists, and technicians make up a comprehensive team that works with their clients to realize their expectations.

Bernard Chartier

Bernard Chartier possesses over 30 years of experience in the audiovisual and multimedia communications field. Since creating his own business in multimedia production in 1985 he joined the ranks of Nurun in 2000 and has been with Technicolor since February 2006, specializing specifically in Web architecture and in the development of institutional Internet sites. Mr Chartier has worked on the development of interactive material since 1992. Having worked in Quebec, Canada and in Europe, the numerous prizes and mentions that he has received over the years are testament to his abilities. Mr Chartier has directed and worked on virtual museum projects for such organizations as the Naval Museum of Quebec, la Maison St Gabriel, and the Aviation Museum in Bagotteville.

Yuval Levy

A Quebecer by adoption, Yuval is a passionate panoramic photographer and technologist. He has collaborated on many virtual reality projects on both sides of the Atlantic. Amongst others he was responsible for the image treatment for the virtual visit of the Italian city of Marsala and produced the virtual visit of the Maison Opération Enfant Soleil 2006 in collaboration with Remax-Québec. He regularly contributes to the World Wide panorama, the largest VR showcase in the world, and has been published in the industry’s prestigious VRMag. In 2007 he administered a team of programmers sponsored by Google to create programs for the production of panoramas.

Lorraine O’Donnell

Lorraine O’Donnell is a historian and lecturer at Université Laval. She holds a doctorate in History from McGill University and has been the recipient of prestigious research fellowships, such as the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowship. Author of numerous scientific articles, she has unique expertise in document research and regularly contributes this expertise in different university research projects.
